Forest Management

Sumitomo Forestry also conducts forestry— the origin of our company — in Indonesia.

We started the Forest Regeneration Project in Sebulu, East Kalimantan, in 1991. After that, we implement forest restorations in Way Kambas (Lampung), Bromo Mountain (East Jawa), Paliyan (Central Jawa), Sumba Island (East Nusa Tenggara).

Other than forest restoration, we started collaborative forestry with local communities in 1999 for a timber production. PT. Kutai Timber Indonesia and PT. Rimba Partikel Indonesia continues this activity.

And in 2009, we started forestry in our owned concessions in West Kalimantan.Currently (as of December 2025), 4 companies are operating its business with around 16,000ha in West Kalimantan;

Industrial tree planation on peatlands

PT. Wana Subur Lestari
PT. Mayangkara Tanaman Industri
PT. Kubu Mulia Forestry

Carbon credit business in mangrove forest

PT. Bina Ovivipari Semesta

Balancing Environment and Economy

The total area of our concession in West Kalimantan reaches 160,000ha. But we use 33,000ha (20%) for plantations for timber production and the other areas are conserved for its environmental services.
We proposed a concept of ”Green Corridor” to conserve the ecosystem of the area at landscape level, through cooperation with surrounding forest companies.

Innovative Sustainable Peatland Management

Since we started plantation on peatlands in 2009, we developed “Stock-Based Water Management”. In this management, we avoid peat drainage that occurs in the conventional peatland management.
As the result, we have succeeded to prevent peatland fires even in the years with severe dry seasons.

Pilot Project to Restore and Manage peatland with the Ministry of Forestry

Indonesia has peatlands degraded through inappropriate utilization, giving rise to various environmental from local to global level.
We believe that our technology and experiences in West Kalimantan can contribute to restoration of degraded peatlands in Indonesia.
The Ministry of Forestry Indonesia and PT Sumitomo Forestry have signed the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoU) of the Pilot Project for Restoration and Management of Peatland Ecosystem in Central Kalimantan.
Upon completing the required procedures for launching the project, we will implement this pilot project to contribution to Indonesia.
